NPL are hosting the next PERF meeting on the 8th and 9th May. The Petroleum Environmental Research Forum (PERF) is a non-profit organization created to provide a stimulus to and a forum for the collection, exchange, and analysis of research information relating to the development of technology for health, environment & safety, waste reduction and system security in the petroleum industry.

The theme for the meeting will be “Measurement Challenges in the Petroleum Industry”, and the agenda will be built around environmental media measurement challenges (in air, water and land) and health & safety measurement challenges.

We are structuring an agenda for the meeting that will cover the following topics.

1. Environmental Media Measurement Challenges
a. Air, for example:
i. Greenhouse Gases
ii. Fence line monitoring
iii. Compliance Monitoring
iv. Hazardous gases, e.g., H2S
v. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), e.g., benzene, formaldehyde.
b. Water, for example:
i. Freshwater sourcing
ii. Discharges, e.g., oil in water – droplets, emulsions
iii. Subsea
iv. Refinery effluents, heavy metals, selenium
c. Land and Groundwater, for example:
i. Environmental mapping
ii. Change detection and multi temporal
iii. BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) in groundwater
iv. Natural carbon sinks
v. Detect small liquid leaks to land
d. Health and Safety Measurement Challenges, for example:
i. Micro plastics
ii. Noise

We are currently requesting abstracts for presentations on the above topics. Abstracts should include your name, a paragraph overview of the topic and the oganisation you represent. Abstracts should be a maximum of 300 words. The deadline for abstracts will be the 25th March after which they will be reviewed by the PERF board to short-list and finalise those that will be added to the agenda. Presentations will be 20 minutes with 10 minutes for questions. If you have an abstract you would like to submit please email PERF2019@npl.co.uk

Who should attend?

The event is open to all but will be of importance to people from industry, academia or government with a specific interest around health and safety and environmental challenges in the Petroleum Industry. PERF members include BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Equinor, ExxonMobil, Hess Corporation, Philips 66, Qatar Petroleum, Repsol, Saudi Aramco Oil Company, Shell, Suncor, Total and Tullow.
